College Roundup: Navy first in Patriot League Presidents' Cup standings

Navy players celebrate a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross in the deciding game of the Patriot League championship series on Monday at Max Bishop Stadium. The Mids won the series two games to one and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

NAVY ATHLETICS: On the strength of seven conference championships during the 2015-16 season, Navy finished first in the Corvias Patriot League Presidents' Cup standings for the third straight year and for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Mids won the overall title with 151.75 points, and finished first in a close race for the third straight season as Bucknell (147.25) was the runner-up and Boston University (143.75) came in third place. The top three were in the same position as last season. The rest of the overall standings featured Army West Point (131), Lehigh (121.5), Holy Cross (82.75), Colgate (79.25), Loyola University Maryland (69.5), American (68.75) and Lafayette (52.5).

Navy has dominated the rest of the Patriot League over the last five seasons winning 36 conference titles, twice as many championships as any other team over that time frame. Boston is next with 17 conference titles, while Bucknell has won 15, Lehigh 12 and Army 11. Rounding out the five year totals are Loyola and American (7), Colgate (6), Lafayette (5) and Holy Cross (1).

NAVY MEN'S TRACK: The Navy men's track and field team will send five athletes to the 2016 NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida from May 26-28. Seniors Steve Schroeder (1,500m) and Jay Stell (javelin) and sophomores John Campbell (discus), Sean Richards (javelin) and Tyler Russell (high jump) will be competing at Hodges Stadium on the campus of North Florida.

The top-48 ranked athletes in each event in the East Region qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championship.

Navy athletes will need to finish in the top-12 in their respective event to qualify for the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Oregon on June 8-11.

NAVY WOMEN'S SOCCER: Head coach Carin Gabarra announced that Joe Mallia will join the Mids staff as an assistant coach. Mallia comes to Navy with over 20-plus years of Division I women's soccer coaching experience.

Mallia has an extensive background coaching Division I women's soccer players, accruing 12 years as a head coach and 10 years as an assistant coach. Mallia comes to Navy after a four-year stint at the University of Tennessee as an assistant coach. With his main focus on the Volunteer defense, he helped guide UT to one of the top defenses in the Southeastern Conference with a goals-against average of 0.96 over four seasons.

Before Tennessee, Mallia led Loyola Marymount University for five seasons as the head coach. Under his tutelage, the Lions tallied a 50-34-11 overall record in five years, including four double-digit win seasons.

Mallia began his Division I coaching experience at Loyola University (Md.). He coached four seasons (1994-1997) with the Greyhounds as an assistant coach, tallying a 47-27-7 record. Mallia then was promoted as Loyola's head coach for the beginning of the 1998 season and guided the Greyhounds to one of their best stretches in program history. He led Loyola to five consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament titles (2000-04) and accrued a record of 87-45-9 over seven years.

As a player, Mallia started for Old Dominion University from 1987 to 1991. He led the Monarch's to a 33-15-13 record and the program's first ever NCAA College Cup appearance in 1989. Mallia was named to Old Dominion's Hall of Fame in 1998.

Mallia graduated Old Dominion with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine.

STEVENS MEN'S LACROSSE: Freshman Max Bailey (Severn) of Stevens Institute of Technology was named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year. In addition to his Rookie of the Year nod, Bailey was named to the Second Team. The rookie was third on the club with 33 goals and second with 62 points, including an 11 point performance against Alfred on March 26.

MARYLAND BASEBALL: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Taylor Bloom (Crofton, Riverdale Baltist) was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team, the conference announced Tuesday.

Bloom emerged as Maryland's Saturday starter after a great end to 2015 and did not disappoint, notching a 6-4 record with a 2.46 ERA, the sixth-best in the conference. Bloom tossed five complete games, the most in the Big Ten and eight-most in the country and accumulated 95.0 IP, the third most in the Big Ten and the fourth most in a single season in Maryland history. Bloom had more starts (13) than walks (9) and struck out 56 batters. His walks per nine innings mark (0.85) is first in the Big Ten and sixth in the country. Two of Bloom's complete games came in under 100 pitches.

MARYLAND MEN'S BASKETBALL: The Terps will play host to Pittsburgh Tuesday, Nov. 29, in the 2016 Big Ten/ACC Challenge at XFINITY Center as announced by ESPN.

Maryland is tied for the third-most wins all-time in the Challenge, collecting 10 victories since its inception in 1999. Maryland and Pitt have met nine previous times, with the Terps owning a 5-4 edge in the all-time series. The Terps last met the Panthers on Jan. 25, 2014 in an 83-79 loss at XFINITY Center – the lone season both programs were members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
