Navy men's basketball held its postseason awards banquet over the weekend and former assistant coach Ernie Nestor received lifetime achievement recognition.
Nestor, who recently announced he was retiring after 40 seasons as a college basketball coach, spent five years at Navy.
Graduating seniors Tim Abruzzo and Zach Fong shared the Rear Admiral Ronald Marryott Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Navy basketball player. It is presented to the player or players who embody what Navy basketball is all about by demonstrating commitment to character and leadership and to his teammates.
Junior swingman Shawn Anderson earned the Charles McDonough Most Outstanding Player Award for making the greatest impact over the course of the season.
Junior guard Bryce Dulin earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award for exceptional performance on that end of the floor while sophomore point guard Hasan Abdullah and sophomore forward George Kiernan shared the Most Improved Player Award for showing measurable progress in key year-to-year statistics.
Senior guard Grant Vermeer picked up the Kevin Sinnett Academic Achievement Award for demonstrating excellence in the classroom. Senior center Edward Alade received the David Robinson Award as member of the graduating class who contributed the most to the team's success during his playing career.
Junior forward Tom Lacey was presented with a commemorative basketball for leading the Patriot League in offensive rebounding.
NAVY WOMEN'S CREW: In the third Patriot League Boat of the Week awards announcement of the season, the Mids swept the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four Boat of the Week accolades. Navy was recognized for its efforts at the George Washington Invitational this past weekend. This is the second straight week that Navy has garnered both Patriot League awards.
NAVY WOMEN'S TENNIS: Head coach Keith Puryear won his 600th career match on Wednesday as he led the Mids (16-10, 4-2 PL) to a 7-0 win at Loyola (7-8, 2-4 PL) in a Patriot League match.
NAVY GYMNASTICS: The 2017 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship qualifying selections were announced on Tuesday and the Mids were one of 12 teams to garner a bid and a chance to compete for the national title. The championship qualifying meet will take place Friday, April 21 at Army's Christl Arena. Navy has now earned a spot in the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet in each of the last two years. Prior to 2016, the last and only prior appearance by a Midshipmen team in the national meet was in 2009.
AACC WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Sophia Michael (Arundel) had six goals and two assists, Alyssa Yates (Spalding) added three goals and an assist and Renee Ruppert (Severna Park) finished with three goals and an assist as the River Hawks defeated Harford Community College 18-9. Emily Rowe (Spalding) contributed two goals and two assists, Caitlyn Shriver (Northeast) pitched in two goals and an assist, Maddie Szanyi (South River) had a goal and two assists and Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Old Mill) and Maggie McGeady (Severna Park) each chipped in with a goal. Tori Mattoon (Northeast) made nine saves for AACC (8-2).
YORK WOMEN'S LACROSSE: The Spartans defeated Salisbury for the first time in school history by a score of 10-6 on Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference battle. With the win, the Spartans clinched at least a share of the CAC regular season title.
Ariana Maxwell (Chesapeake) had a goal for the Sea Gulls.
SALISBURY MEN'S LACROSSE: The No. 1 ranked Sea Gulls hosted Capital Athletic Conference rival, third-ranked York College on Wednesday night and took down the Spartans, 17-10. With the win Salisbury (15-0, 8-0 CAC) has won 20-straight games dating back to last season when York beat the Gulls in the CAC championship game. Also with the win, Salisbury secures home-field advantage throughout the CAC playoffs.
MCDANIEL MEN'S LACROSSE: Franklin & Marshall jumped out to a 5-0 first-quarter lead before holding on for a 12-10 victory over the Green Terror in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday. Jackson Reilly (Southern) had a goal for McDaniel.
ST. MARY'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Abbey Harrison found the top right corner with 16.6 seconds on the clock to propel the Seahawks to a 16-15 Capital Athletic Conference win over Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon. Harrison, who finished with three goals off the bench, helped St. Mary's secure one of six postseason spots. Erika Kopf (Annapolis) tallied three goals and Meg Gesner (Severn) added a goal and three assists for the Seahawks. Carly Wilson (Arundel) provided four assists for the Captains.
LYNCHBURG MEN'S LACROSSE: Colin McGuire (St. Mary's) tallied three goals and two assists and Nick Willertz (Severn, Mount St. Joseph) added a goal as the Hornets defeated Randolph College, 18-7, on Wednesday.
LEBANON VALLEY WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Kirsten Bannan (St. Mary's) scored a pair of goals but the Dutchmen were defeated by the Warriors, 12-8, in a MAC Commonwealth game.
