A traffic stop for not wearing a seat belt turned into an arrest over nearly $600 in drugs, police said.
A man and a woman were arrested Thursday after police said they were found with approximately $600 in drugs on them following a traffic stop in Brooklyn Park.
Anne Arundel police said officers pulled over a Mitsubishi Gallant in the area of Southerly Road and Ballman Avenue around noon Thursday after seeing the driver without his seat belt on.
After police identified the man, Deon McDaniel, 23, of Brooklyn Park, they discovered he was wanted on an active warrant for violation of probation.
Police said officers saw loose pieces of suspected crack cocaine on his driver seat when he was asked to exit his car.
A female passenger, Shalaina Yvonne Rollins, 30, of Brooklyn Park, was also asked to step out of the vehicle, and police said two suspected capsules of heroin and some crack cocaine were found on her seat.
Police said a search of the two found they were in possession of a total of about $370 worth of heroin and $220 worth of crack cocaine.
They were arrested and charged with drug possession and distribution charges in relation to the stop.
