Once a month, the Orlando Chrome Divas, a local chapter of the national women's motorcycle riding organization, plans a ride with its members. A few times a year, a destination is selected for an overnight ride. Whether it is near or far, the destination must have two basic requirements: interesting, scenic routes and a good place to eat at the end of the ride.
This month the chosen destination was Crystal River, a scenic coastal town off Florida's west coast, just a little over two-hours northwest of Orlando. Situated around the picturesque spring-fed Kings Bay, Crystal River is also known as the "home of the Manatee".
The club gathers in the parking lot of West Town Mall of Altamonte Springs on an early Saturday morning. Once a head count is made, waivers are signed and rules of the road are reviewed, a dozen women saddled up on their steeds of steel and roared out. It's an impressive sight.
Hot, sweaty with windshields and visors filled with the splattered remains of Lovebugs, the women arrived without incident. It was a great ride filled with appreciation of Florida's scenic byways and the camaraderie of the road.
