Athens Theatre benefit for costumer Tina Boisvert

The Sands Theater Center is staging a musical benefit for Tina Boisvert, long-time costumer for both the Sands Theater and Shoestring Theatre.

Boisvert has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and several months ago lost the ability to speak. The theater troupe hopes to raise funds to help Boisvert and her family in what look to be her final days.

Musicians, vocalists, dancers and other performers have banded together for "Concert for a Cause." In the cast, familiar to theatergoers at DeLand's Athens Theatre, are Kelly Fagan (Grizabella in "Cats" and Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd"); David Lowe (Officer Lockstock in "Urinetown," Emile in "South Pacific"); Alexa Baldwin (Hope in "Urinetown," Sandy in "Grease"); Aladdin Demps (Deuteronomy in "Cats," Toby in "Sweeney Todd"); Robert Baldwin (Danny in "Grease"); David McCarthy (Edna in "Hairspray," Ursula in "The Little Mermaid"); and many others.

The Baby Boomers band will perform, Preps Dance School & Company will showcase an upbeat number from "Mary Poppins," and Julie Yadanza, co-founder of Wilde Coward Theatre Company, will dance her tribute to Boisvert.

Tickets are $15; all proceeds go to Boisvert and her family. Donations can also be made at

The Concert for a Cause is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. The Athens Theatre is at 124 N. Florida Ave., DeLand.
