'Reports of my demise greatly exaggerated'

To paraphrase Mark Twain, "the reports of my infirmity have been greatly exaggerated" ("Alan Walden, Republican candidate for mayor, announces cancer diagnosis," July 9).

While it is true that I had to deal with a potentially deadly medical problem this summer, rumors and insinuations that I am unable to continue my campaign to become the next mayor of Baltimore are false.

The cancer with which I was afflicted has been removed successfully and completely. The medical professionals who made the diagnosis and performed the surgery are satisfied with the outcome and say that no further treatment is necessary.

And while I appreciate the prayers and good wishes offered during this ordeal, I shall appreciate your votes in November even more. There a great deal that must be done to create a better, brighter, bolder Baltimore and as mayor I expect to lead the celebration of all that is good about our city and its future.
