The USS Zumwalt is some ship — and for $4.4 billion she'd better be ("Navy's new stealth destroyer Zumwalt to arrive in Baltimore Friday for Fleet Week commissioning," Oct. 6)! How many more in this class are on the drawing board? As a taxpayer, I ask why we need these vessels at all. And what countries are we planning to go after?
As reported, the Zumwalt is "likely to have a role in the development of new weapons, including lasers and electromagnetically powered rail guns, which fire metal slugs at devastating velocities." Who are we planning to use this against?
I believe in national defense. However, the USS Zumwalt is primarily an attack vessel. This scares me. Let's not start World War III if we don't have to. America already spends too much time, energy and money meddling where we don't belong.
I'd like to see our military more concerned with protecting us here at home.
