Keeping a cool head in troubled times

Recently, two African-Americans and five police officers were killed in Dallas, Baton Rouge and Minneapolis ("Dallas sniper attack: 5 police officers dead, 7 wounded; suspect identified," July 8).

But ignorance remains alive. It's a disease that afflicts much of the nation, including its youth.

As a sophomore in high school, I witness that ignorance firsthand. Texts, Instagram posts, tweets, you name it — my peers either don't know the facts, or they fail to ever examine them from the other side's point of view.

The situation calls for a calm analysis of complex issues rather than simply going off of talking points. Defending police brutality or resorting to gun violence will not solve anything. But empathetic dinner table conversations and open classroom discussions just might.
