Building youth with building skills

I write from Boston where in the Boston Globe last week there was a compelling article about Youth Build, a nationally known organization that teaches at-risk youth building skills and helps them earn a GED. It has been very successful for years in the City of Boston and other cities around the country. It was founded by Dorothy Stoneman, a dynamic Bostonian, who has devoted her career to this project.

The Globe article pointed out that Youth Build was in place in Baltimore but because of lack of funding was closed down. Given what I have learned about Baltimore over the past week, I find this unacceptable. Many people and commentators are suggesting "conversation," which is of course necessary, but Youth Build is action. It is action that could take place immediately, focusing on just the people who need the help. Take action, Baltimore!
