I recently read of Gov. Larry Hogan's plan to seek tax exemptions on pensions for military veterans ("Hogan pushes plan to spare veterans from pension tax," Feb. 13). Teachers who are on the front lines of educating our future generations — often for multiple times as many years as veterans serve in the military — are equally deserving of such a tax break for pensions, should any be given.
And what about firefighters or police officers or even trash collectors who deal with our rat-infested garbage day in and day out? I could think of scores of categories of workers who are just as entitled to this break.
So before any tax exemption is given, I urge our lawmakers to consider all those who may have earned it and determine if our budget can really accommodate them all. Let's not give preferential treatment just to one class of public servant.
