Contrary to assertions made during the debate between Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Donna Edwards at Goucher College last week, Mr. Van Hollen is one of Maryland's — and America's — top leaders in preventing gun violence.

As the leader of Maryland's gun violence prevention organization while he was in the Maryland General Assembly, I saw him use smart parliamentary procedure to rescue a bill to protect kids from guns from a recalcitrant senate committee and get the bill passed.

Now he has introduced legislation in Congress that would give other states incentives to enact handgun purchaser licensing laws like Maryland enacted in 2013.

It's clear that handgun purchaser licensing helps keep guns out of the hands of criminals and reduces gun deaths. But states with licensing laws like Maryland's are still at risk because of guns coming from other states.

I was thrilled that Mr. Van Hollen quickly understood this issue and came up with a smart way to protect Marylanders from guns from other states as well as to save lives all across the county.

We need him in the U.S. Senate to fight for this measure. That why I strongly support Mr. Van Hollen for U.S. Senate this year.
