Women Terps shortchanged in sports section

The Maryland women's basketball team won an exciting game against Rutgers on Tuesday night. The next day there was no article in the sports section since it was a late game. That I understand. In the Thursday sports section on page 5, there was a tiny, two-paragraph reference to the women's Tuesday night game. However, the Maryland men's basketball team, which played Indiana Wednesday night in a late game, got a huge front page picture with the headline "In a tight spot" and directions to go on-line for the story.

The women are ranked No. 5 in the nation and are unbeaten so far in The Big Ten conference. Conference coaches acknowledge the Women Terps as the team to beat, and the Washington Post sports writer Mark Giannotto stated that he believes Maryland "could be poised" to do well in the post season. There should have been at least a picture, preferably large and on the front page of the sports section like the men, of the women's game. All women's sports, especially those receiving national attention, deserve better coverage than this.
