I am writing in response to your article on efforts to repeal instate tuition for illegal immigrants ("Repeal for tuition bill gets under way" May 4). Shame on our legislators for attempting to repeal legislation that could only propel our state forward. The only reason I can find for opposing such legislation is bigotry and racism.
The cost to taxpayers is minimal and the payback could be greater than we ever imagined. This legislation gives students who parents have paid taxes the opportunity to further educate themselves, thus making them a better citizen, worker, parent and community member. What could possibly be the problem with having a more educated citizenry?
I implore citizens of Maryland to not sign a petition to repeal this act and to ask themselves not only what they have to lose if this legislation become law but what we all could gain if it does.
