At this point, we are becoming conditioned to hearing alternative facts emanating from the Trump White House, but the fake news about Sweden uttered by a sitting president is anything but funny ("Swedes scratch heads after Trump says 'look what's happening last night in Sweden,'" Feb. 19). In an effort to clean up the mess left by President Donald Trump, it was announced that the president was alluding to a spike in crime in Sweden caused by an influx of refugees. I believe that if the same number of Norwegians, Italians or Americans emigrated to Sweden there would be a proportionate increase in crime.
Mr. Trump's hypocrisy is truly breathtaking. Mr. Trump is focusing on crime by immigrants while ignoring the very serious crimes committed by Americans whose families have been here for generations. Mr. Trump's support of the NRA and his failure to commit to serious gun control legislation means that he could care less as to how many Americans are murdered in their own country by their fellow American citizens. Mr. Trump has an incredibly narrow focus and an inability to comprehend simple facts. I have been to Sweden a few times, and we know how sophisticated Swedes can be. I think they see Mr. Trump as a joke most of the time and as a very dangerous person the rest of the time. Mr. Trump is both a buffoon and a very dangerous person.
I really think that Americans are more at risk as a result of Mr. Trump's incompetence than are the Swedes. We need to brace ourselves, as we do not know what craziness the White House will deliver in the next few days. I hope our elected representatives are keeping a score card as we need to prepare for the next public relations and diplomatic disaster. There is nobody more deserving of being fired than Donald Trump.
