Letter writer Jon Ketzner insists that Donald Trump's supporters are made up of "hardworking, patriotic Americans" whom Hillary Clinton has demonized as "deplorables" ("In defense of the 'deplorables,'" Sept. 13).
I guess I need to get my eyes checked and my hearing examined.
So I went looking for previous letters from Trump supporters who have spoken out against those whose bad behavior has given the candidate a black eye: Cold-clocking protesters at rallies; chanting "lock her up" and "kill the b****" in unison; welcoming support from white supremacists, etc.
I can't find a single example of when these "real Americans" have every decried this deplorable behavior.
If Mr. Trump's supporters are as all-American as Mr. Ketzner claims, where are the calls for mature behavior or respect for the opinions of others? Where is their refusal to embrace racism represented by the likes of David Duke?
Mostly it's a blank slate, and the silence is deafening.
Granted, there have been a couple of half-hearted restatements by the candidate or his campaign, always after the fact and under pressure.
But really, Trump supporters have been uncommonly silent on these well-documented and disgusting behaviors, and their silence speaks volumes.
