Trump's 'war zone' comment insults black voters

In the past week Donald Trump has attempted to court African-American voters while depicting them as living in gun- and drug-infested "war zones" ("The Baltimore snub," Aug. 3).

Apparently Mr. Trump is not aware of the fact that one of the biggest demographic changes in postwar America was the rise of the African-American middle class, the enormous increase in college educated African-Americans and the incredible number of job types and classifications that are now routinely filled by African-Americans.

While it is certainly true that the rising tide has not lifted all boats, it is insulting and a flagrant misrepresentation of African-Americans to describe them all as living in "war zones."

The last time I checked, neighborhoods such as Randallstown and Owings Mills were thriving and at peace despite having substantial populations of African-Americans. They are most certainly not war zones.
