Columnist Jules Witcover says that "the biggest thing that Donald Trump brings to the presidential race is his ego ("A Trumped-up candidacy," June 22).

Fair enough. "The Donald" certainly has a large ego, but what self-made billionaire doesn't? Mr. Trump has made, and lost, massive fortunes, and he is still a relatively young man. Nor did his riches come from being a politician in Washington, where millionaires and billionaires are made through insider trading and other perks.

Mr. Trump is an undeniably successful businessman, not a politician, and that is desirable as far as potential presidents go. The most important "skill" that any successful CEO must have is the ability to recognize a need in the organization, and then identify the best person to fill it. Good CEOs command high salaries because they possess those attributes.

When CEOs move from one type of situation to something completely different and maintain that success, it isn't because they know everything about every phase of the operation at hand. It's because the know how to identify the people who do know everything about a particular phase, then "plug them into the organization" and let them do what they do best.
