I am a lifelong Democrat who has voted for two Republican candidates for president and two GOP candidates for senator. I did so because they were moderate, intelligent, fair-minded and politically experienced alternatives to the Democratic candidates.
If I were a Republican today, however, I could not in good conscience vote for Donald Trump. He has no experience in governing, he plays on the fears and frustrations of people, he judges people on the basis of race, gender and national origin rather on their merits as individuals, and he claims that those who support him are super-intelligent while those who oppose him are stupid.
He is a divider, not someone who brings people together. Even Republicans are having second thoughts about him becoming president of the U.S.
I respect Gov. Larry Hogan's neutrality about the prospective Republican nominee and his decision to focus on the business of Maryland as his number one priority. Whether Maryland Republicans vote for Hillary Clinton or not, surely they will not be a part of electing a self-aggrandizing person like Mr. Trump. He is an embarrassment.
