Recent reports of a need for a significant rise in transit fares again bring to the surface the fact that transit fares have gone up several times since the last time the gas tax was raised ("A fair increase," Dec. 26). This is an unfair burden placed only on transit riders, and it encourages them to drive.
Gas taxes and transit fares should be linked. When one goes up, so should the other, and by a like amount percentage wise. Why should the driver get a free ride when transit passengers have a legal requirement to meet a certain percentage of the cost? Certainly the gas tax does not meet the full cost of all the services drivers get.
