Sept. 17 was National Tradesmen Day, and nothing reminds us of the importance of these oft underappreciated workers like an emergency. The night our kitchen floor filled with enough water to float a kayak, I wanted to throw my arms around Charlie, our plumber, when he arrived, tools in hand, at 11 p.m.
This year, my husband and I were driving home from breakfast with friends when we discovered our right front tire was nearly flat.
Fortunately, we made it to our neighborhood garage. Andrew Foltz, the automotive technician, drove our car over a lift, removed the wheel and pulled out a 1-inch-long nail.
Andrew is part of a family owned and operated business that has served Perry Hall since 1970. He's just one of countless, competent tradesmen we take for granted — until a nail rears its ugly head, or a dishwasher springs a leak late at night.
We drove away from the garage minutes later on four inflated tires, grateful for hard-working, competent tradesmen everywhere.
