Zero tolerance for zero tolerance

The zero tolerance mentality that many schools have incorporated is just so un-American. The mind-set is rigid, unyielding and is just utterly ridiculous ("Common sense in the classroom," Sept. 3).

Our school systems have lost their focus on priorities, such as offering the optimum learning environment for our children. Any energy directed toward enforcing zero tolerance is wasted energy. To say it defies any logic is a huge understatement.

Let's get back to the true fundamentals of teachers imparting wisdom and knowledge to our students, and not obsessing over Jason forming a pistol shape from a sandwich.

How did it devolve into this, in my America? I cannot put my finger on it, but, to me, it is so very antithetical to anything positive and fruitful our schools are doing to educate our children.

Just say no to zero tolerance. We have come way too far as a nation to condone this despicable, ridiculous concept.
