Poachers deserve punishment

William "Billy" Lednum, a fourth-generation Tilghman Island resident, has been voted to remain fire chief while residing in Federal prison for one year. He pled guilty to a major rockfish poaching operation. (Baltimore Sun video)

After reading the article, "Caught in the net" (Feb. 22), I am convinced I do not understand people. The residents of Tilghman Island are supporting the watermen who are going to prison for poaching rockfish. These watermen not only violated the law, they basically robbed their fellow islanders, other watermen and Maryland residents.

These men are not going to prison for "just catching a fish," they are going to prison for endangering a fishery and raping the environment. It's about time the state stepped in and enforced as harsh a penalty as possible to those who think the law does not apply to them. For those watermen who believe it is "just a fish," I recommend you look for a new occupation.
