Baltimore schools CEO Gregory Thornton's decision not to delay or close the schools during Tuesday's1-3 inch snowfall appears misplaced in both time and place. My wife and I attended Baltimore elementary schools in the 1940s when 1-3 inches of snow was commonplace and no need for alarm for children. I lived in Syracuse, N.Y., during my doctoral studies in education. My wife and I lived in Omaha, Neb., for 10 years. Mr. Thornton just arrived from Milwaukee. All of these places are accustomed to greater amounts of snow, and it takes more than 1-3 inches before schools are closed.
However in this time and place, 2015 in Baltimore, the decisions made by the area's county, private and religious schools would have been a better gauge for Mr. Thornton to observe and follow. In the future it is my hope and prayer that in similar conditions he will put the safety and welfare of Baltimore children ahead of his neophyte and cavalier decision of putting children, teachers and staff in harms way for education's sake.
