Tim Tebow: Making a spectacle of personal piety

A recent letter writer critical of the negative attention that Bronco's quarterback Tim Tebow has been attracting misses the point, I think ("Tebow's faith is integral to the player, the man and the human being," Jan. 20).

Mr. Tebow is not the first and certainly will not be the last professional athlete to be deeply religious. What sets him apart is the public spectacle he makes of his faith. He does not need to get down on one knee in front of thousands of fans in order to pray when he can do so privately.

I can remember a time when one's religion was not worn on one's sleeve. Now there are license plates, bumper stickers, tattoos, etc., all proclaiming Jesus' love. If Jesus were alive today, I sincerely believe he would be among those most critical of such ostentatious displays of piety.
