Teacher fired for being American

The Sun on Monday carried a story that a 27-year, national-board-certified teacher with 18 years experience at Patterson High School was told her services were not a good match. My conclusion is that she is being "fired" for being American.

One has to suspect this is because the school has an enlarged Hispanic student body. Spanish is becoming the first language and English second there. Make a phone call and it is: "Press one for English."

During the great immigration wave prior to the 1940s, everyone was expected to know English and immigrants adapted to their new country's laws, business and language. Why do we have to make an exception now? Why are they special as opposed to the thousands and thousands of Germans, Italians, Poles and Slavs who came here before us?
