Inheritance tax threshold needs to be raised [Letter]

I am referring to two articles in the Baltimore Sun. The first is the editorial "Business and the governor's race" (Nov. 7) and the other a reaction entitled "Advocates line up in defense of Md. taxes" (Nov. 10). It didn't take long of the for the tax-and-spend crowd to join the fray to hold on to every penny they can extract from the Maryland taxpayers.

I see no reason there should not be a reasoned discussion of what the candidates for governor are proposing or will propose. But in the general attack atmosphere of politics these days there is not much hope for that.

The one thing Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler suggested that I believe needs to be addressed is raising the threshold for the inheritance tax from $1million to $5 million.

That would put it in line with the federal threshold. It needs to be raised, doubled at a minimum. In a sense, it is double taxation and for that reason numbers of Marylanders have moved to friendlier states, Virginia included.
