Police need surveillance

Square Off with Richard Sher welcomes Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, his new media chief, T.J. Smith along with Jimmy Mathis and Catalina Byrd. They will discuss the surveillance system that’s been working since January, but not disclosed until this week. And how come the Mayor didn’t even know about it until just recently. (WMAR)

I had to scratch my head after reading Jessica Anderson's article on the American Civil Liberties Union's issue with police surveillance ("Regulations sought for police surveillance," Sept. 22). The ACLU's executive director claims that communities of color and low income areas are monitored disproportionately. I wonder if that monitoring could be based on where the preponderance of crimes are committed.

Heaven forbid we concentrate our policing resources in places where the bad guys are hard at work. Give our police credit for trying to use technology to get a jump on crime. The fact that they issued no press release or failed to get buy-ins from local politicians and community activists does not warrant shoving this surveillance program under the bus at a time when Baltimore needs every tool available to get these bad guys off the streets.
