I am always amazed to find someone who thinks the current Maryland speed limits are too slow ("Pick up the pace of Md.'s absurdly slow speed limits," Feb. 27). The problem is not the speed limit. The problem is the fact that too many vehicles occupy a limited driving area.
Sure, the cars are designed better today. However, the majority of drivers lack the focus and attention required to safely operate a motor vehicle at current highway speeds. All one has to do is see car after car pass you at 70-plus miles per hour daily with little or no room to avoid a pile-up should someone brake. Add to that the driver who will cross multiple lanes of traffic weaving in and out at high speed, as if they were in a video game, just to get around people driving sensibly and you have the recipe for disaster.
If the speed limit was raised to 70 mph, then most would drive 80 mph or higher. Drivers should relax and go with the flow as congestion is only going to get worse. Above all, and what people do not take seriously is, "Driving is a privilege not a right."
