The main argument against holding special elections to fill vacancies is the cost ("Carroll folderol," Feb. 9).
Maryland should investigate low-cost methods for holding elections. I can think of two: Mail balloting, which Oregon has used successfully for over 20 years to cut election costs and increase turn-out. And how about Internet voting? It's coming eventually; why can't Maryland be a trailblazer?
The controversial actions by Republican central committees in both Carroll and Frederick Counties in filling recent General Assembly vacancies have only emphasized the hazards of letting a mere handful of party zealots decide who is going to serve the public for almost a full four-year term.
