Paid sick leave pays off for employers

Since 1982 when my company Man & Machine was organized, I have believed that the main priorities for my employees should be themselves and their families, and then the company. That's because happy and healthy employees enable businesses to grow and flourish.

My business has become successful because I provide sick leave. My associates take care of themselves and don't come into work and get others sick. If they do not feel 100 percent, then they cannot give 100 percent. Their hard work and health are crucial to our success. This is part of a good balance between work and home life. My associates appreciate this viewpoint, and the result is a loyal and efficient workforce.

I see my employees as a part of my family. Why would I expect anyone in my family to work if they are sick? It makes good business sense to take care of my associates as they take care of my business. Maryland should take note of the many business benefits of paid sick leave and work toward providing this policy to all of the state's employees.
