Drs. Paul McHugh and Lawrence Mayer, in defending their "Sexuality and Gender" paper ("Authors defend controversial report on sexuality," Oct. 12), make a point of insisting that sexuality is strictly binary (male is male, female is female and there is nothing in between), and that sexual orientation is neither innate nor immutable.
At the end of the day, who cares whether same-sex attraction is a choice? If it is, it's a perfectly valid choice. As to what used to be called "gender dysphoria," since the only effective treatment is allowing transgender people to live as who they feel they really are, who cares whether anyone can pinpoint a biological basis for it?
It's far more important to embrace diversity in all its forms and to build a safe and equitable world for all.
