Szeliga is more Trump than Hogan

Richard Douglas writes that "Maryland deserves Kathy Szeliga" ("A case for Kathy Szeliga for U.S. Senate," Aug. 20), but her record in the Maryland General Assembly and strong support for Donald Trump prove she's the opposite of what Marylanders deserve.

As a Republican delegate in Annapolis, she's consistently voted against the interests of middle class families and those trying to work their way up. She's voted to cut education spending and opposed making college more affordable. She voted against a minimum wage increase that would put more money in the pockets of hard-working Marylanders. This year, Delegate Szeliga also voted against the bill to provide workers with earned paid sick leave. As a result, thousands of Maryland workers must still choose between caring for a sick child or putting food on the table.

With a record like that, it's no surprise Ms. Szeliga supports Mr. Trump. When he attacked a Gold Star family, she was silent. When he suggested that "Second Amendment people" could take action against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, again, deafening silence. When Mr. Trump claimed that President Barack Obama is the founder of ISIS, she didn't condemn his words.

Even Gov. Larry Hogan, a fellow Republican, understands that and has said he will not support Mr. Trump. Yet Kathy Szeliga is still standing proudly by Mr. Trump's side. We need a senator who will fight against divisive politics and dangerous policies. Rep. Chris Van Hollen understands that Republicans, Democrats and independents need to work together as Americans to get things done for Maryland and the country we love. That's why I support Chris Van Hollen.
