The Sun repeats a widespread establishment claim that there is essentially no difference between Maryland's U.S. Senate candidates, Reps. Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen ("Social Security plays prominent role in race," April 5).

Voters who want real information should consult their "Key Votes" records at Vote Smart. Over the course of a couple of years, while they often agreed, there were 11 times when they voted in opposite ways. From my standpoint, every time it was Ms. Edwards who voted the right way and Mr. Van Hollen who let his constituents down.

People with different values would judge those votes differently. That is fine. People have the capacity to form judgments, but you should form your own, not just accept what someone else tells you and certainly not accept the falsehood that there is no difference when the record shows there is.
