Most Marylanders and others around the country aren't aware that our esteemed and venerable public servant, Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, is a proud Girl Scout. I was fortunate to be in the audience a few years back when she extolled her political history beginning in the basement of a Highlandtown church some 70 years ago. She credited her life-long career in public service to her experience in the Girl Scouts ("Hail Baltimore's happy warrior," March 2).
With her trademark sense of humor, she quipped about cookie sales, but it was scouting's oath "to help other people at all times" that laid the foundation for her commitment and dedication to the citizens of Maryland and all Americans.
I am truly proud to stand beside Senator Mikulski and be counted as a member of this worthy, worldwide organization. Her remarkable achievements are exactly what the founders envisioned 103 years ago this month!
