Homeowner Reuben Lattimore ("Some fear alternative to smart meters," March 24) is entitled to his opinion concerning the safety of smart meters, but his claim that it took "generations" to find out that cigarettes were unsafe is totally wrong.
Doctors and scientists have known for generations that cigarettes are the cause of many cancers and other deadly health problems. What took so long was overcoming the influence of the huge amounts of money the tobacco companies were spending to fight tough regulatory legislation and to prevent the public from becoming aware of the health risks of smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products.
It is disappointing that The Sun saw fit to highlight Mr. Lattimore's erroneous claim when reporting the story because it helps perpetuate the nonsensical myth that there was a genuine, long-lasting scientific debate about the safety of tobacco.
The tobacco companies created the appearance of serious scientific disagreement for their own purposes. Just like what climate change deniers are doing now.
