Why are parents trying to get their children in more affluent schools like Mt. Washington, Roland Park and Dumbarton? What do these schools have that schools in Sandtown-Winchester, Ashburton and Violetville don't have?
The schools in the affluent neighborhoods have better books and supplies, the teachers are dedicated and the neighborhood supports the children who actually live there.
Inner city schools need teachers and staff that are specifically trained for urban schools. Urban schools need textbooks and computers, after-school activities and support from the community.
While all students need healthy meals, urban schools are in much more dire need.
Elementary and middle school children need to go to schools in their neighborhoods and be proud of their schools. If we want good citizens, we have to start when they are young, not try to fix their problems when they are teens or young adults.
