Parents oppose armed school police because they don't trust them

The Sun correctly identified trust as issue at the heart of the debate over whether school police officers should be allowed to carry weapons inside school buildings ("A matter of trust," Feb. 27).

Parents are being asked to trust that the training and oversight of school police — who admit they are already breaking the law by carrying weapons inside the schools — is good enough to justify expanding their right to carry weapons.

Meanwhile, the city school board is asking parents to trust it after making it hard for parents have any input in the decision-making process by scheduling a single public hearing with less a week's notice.

For me and the many hundreds of others who have signed a petition asking for the withdrawal of this proposed legislation, that is a bridge too far.

If the Baltimore City school board and the School Police Force want to earn my trust, they can begin by demanding that school police officers honor their oath to uphold, obey and enforce the law just like police anywhere else in the state.
