The benefits of an all-girl school

Upon reading the article about Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, it hearkened back to my days at Western High School ("Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women graduates first class," June 2).

I am very aware of the differences in the world between the Class of 2016 and the Class of 1949. However, while at WHS, I felt a sense of being special and that intellectual pursuits where not for just men. My days at Western were filled with exceptional teachers who pushed us to think.

Being an all-girl school, we did not have the ditzy girl/boy machinations during the school day. For some of us who were not quite ready for that, it brought us comfort that we were not "nerdy." When I reflect on my education, including my days in the University of Maryland Class of 1952, it is Western High School that comes out on top for expanding my mind and for the memorable teachers that shaped my life.

To the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women Class of 2016, I say, "Go, girls." The sky is the limit for you.
