Starting school after Labor Day would hurt student achievement.

As a taxpayer I am concerned about what is happening in Maryland government at this point in time. I refer to Gov. Larry Hogan's support for Comptroller Peter Franchot's proposal to mandate all public schools statewide begin classes the day after Labor Day. This is not his call. Local boards of education have the authority to establish school calendars.

It is clear this move is meant to generate revenue without raising taxes. The premise is if school opening was delayed families and individuals would spend dollars on tourism thus adding tax dollars to run state government. This is not educationally sound. I say this is not educationally sound because in many counties regression in students over the summer is significant. If the summer break is two weeks longer regression will increase.
