'Messed up' state helps illegal immigrants, hurts scholars

I read with disgust the two contrasting articles on the front page of The Sun. The first ("O'Malley signs tuition break," May 11) includes praise for the governor's generosity in giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. And the second ("Seniors stunned by Md. scholarship cuts") grieves the elimination of the state's Distinguished Scholar award.

So now, locally-grown class valedictorian and model student Lindsay Michocki and others like her will spend the summer scrambling to find a way to pay for college entrance in the fall. But a young man named Dustin, who refused to give his last name because he entered the U.S. illegally a few years ago, rejoices at his good fortune in now being able to afford college. What a messed up state this is.
