I am reading "Seniors Stunned by Md. Scholarship Cuts" (May 11) and am having a huge problem reconciling a few things: First, the canceling of $1 million in scholarships for 350 Maryland high school students who have shown enormous integrity and high achievement; second, our interim director of higher education telling these Distinguished Scholars, "These are tough times;" and third, an article a few days ago indicating that the University of Maryland has hired a new basketball coach who said, "It was just too good an offer for me to pass on." His predecessor received about $2 million in compensation and shepherded numerous scholarship players to high basketball achievement and dismal graduation rates.
So I ask everyone from our governor to our higher education officials, "tough times" for whom?
