The Sun's Schaefer coverage has been superb. Two facts, however, were left out.
First, one of the major reasons for the mayor's success in revitalizing Baltimore during his first two terms was the federal revenue sharing program, for which the late President Richard M. Nixon deserves equal credit. I believe Mayor Schaefer would be the first to acknowledge this.
Second, your coverage of the City Hall shootings on April 13, 1976, left out one very important victim. This was the young female aide who "lied" to save her boss's life by telling the shooter that Mayor Schaefer was in Annapolis — when, in fact, he was taking a nap in the office just behind her.
Mr. Hopkins shot and severely wounded this young woman before leaving to go elsewhere in the building.
I recall this mainly because I had almost gotten the very job she held. The mayor himself was under the impression that he had hired me, but it turned out he'd forgotten to ever notify me of that fact. So I had taken another job elsewhere by the time the shooting occurred.
Had Mr. Schaefer let me know I had the job, I might have been sitting in that very same chair the day of the shooting. That's a true story, and he and I talked about it afterward.
