Mayor should veto Port Covington deal

What's next for the Port Covington project. (Baltimore Sun video)

People still have recourse regarding the Port Covington TIF. According to The Sun's Luke Broadwater ("City Council approves $660 million bond deal for Port Covington project," Sept. 19), Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake plans to sign the Port Covington bill next week. I'm sorry to say this bill just adds to the corruption in the Baltimore City political system. As I pointed out in an earlier letter ("Sagamore wins, city loses," Sept. 15), business tycoon Kevin Plank and the Baltimore City politicians such as City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young become the winners while, unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of the citizens of Baltimore are the biggest losers.

Just think how $600 million could help to resurrect the terrible public education system and also to build up the Baltimore City Police Department by hiring the additional 500 police officers needed so citizens can be properly protected.

I urge readers to call the mayor's office and demand that she veto the bill. I believe Mayor Rawlings-Blake has an opportunity to redeem herself for her previous failures as mayor if she will kill this bill which she can do if she wants to. Vetoing the bill could really be her act of redemption, whereas approving this deal would just be another reason for her downfall.
