Dr. Leana Wen, Baltimore’s Health Commissioner, is leaving to serve as the president of Planned Parenthood. Wen has been in charge of the city’s health department since January 2015.

Clearly, Planned Parenthood's massive gain is our city's massive loss (“Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen to serve as new head of Planned Parenthood,” Sept. 12). While we citizens will never fully be given the real reason for Dr. Wen's departure, I don't doubt her sincerity to be at the nexus of women's health care on a national level.

At the same time, I have to wonder how much of her openness to another position comes from her frustration at dealing with the confusing and corrupt power structure that is Baltimore City government. A very intelligent, diligent person like her no doubt had to brush against much mediocrity and less than full integrity that is so entrenched in our current municipal system. She has created a sterling model here and led the way. If we can find someone remotely close to her standard, we will indeed be fortunate.

As someone who worked for Planned Parenthood some decades ago, I can attest to its high level of organization and strong advocacy role. Let's wish Dr. Wen all the best while we try to hold onto some standards for ourselves.
