My husband and I from New Jersey, along with our sister-in-law from Vermont, visited Baltimore last week.
We stayed at the Inner Harbor area and attended an Orioles game against the Yankees at Camden Yards, while making a point of exploring your city beyond its tourist attractions. We had made our plans long before President Donald Trump’s disparaging comments about Baltimore (“Better to have a few rats than to be one,” July 27).
We found the residents of Baltimore to be exceptionally friendly and helpful and witnessed positive interactions and friendships between the races in your integrated community. Yes, Baltimore has its poverty and homeless population, as does any city, but at no time did we have cause to feel uncomfortable or threatened.
Thank you to the people of Baltimore who made us feel welcome and shame on President Trump for his harsh words directed at Rep. Elijah Cummings and your beautiful city (“KAL on Cummings and Trump: Whose city is infested with vermin?” July 31).
