Monday’s press conference with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin made it obvious that President Trump is a clear and present danger to our security and prosperity (“Maryland Gov. Hogan criticizes Trump, calls Putin a ‘thug,’” July 17). It was a thank-you tour with Mr. Trump thanking Mr. Putin for helping him get elected. At the first press meeting, President Trump complimented Mr. Putin on doing a great job on hosting the world soccer tournament. After their 90 minutes or more private conference, he again complimented him on the soccer tournament. Hardly important enough to state a second time, but it made it appear he was kissing up to him.
Many more things Mr. Trump said — and failed to say — will help make Russia great again. And his behavior at the NATO meeting has helped make America weak. The sooner Mr. Trump is out of office, the sooner we can begin to repair the damage this one-man wrecking ball has done. He doesn’t understand he can’t bully countries like he has had success bullying people.
The concerning part is that the party in power, the Republicans, are afraid to speak out strongly against Mr. Trump because he has demonstrated continuously from the campaign to the present that he is the quintessential bully and they don’t want to risk their office by becoming his target. The result is their priority is job first, party second, country last.
