Trump duped a lot of NFL football fans

Local veterans burn NFL jerseys in protest of the way owners have responded to the national anthem controversy

I am having trouble understanding how so many football fans can be so successfully trolled by Donald Trump. The football players taking a knee prior to kick-off is not in any way intended to show disrespect to the flag or military. Just because President Trump says it is disrespectful does not make it so. In fact, taking a knee has always been viewed as a sign of respect. When we pray, we go down on our knees. In olden times, when a man asked his girlfriend to become his wife, he went down on one knee.

The football players have been very clear that the purpose of the protest is to make a statement about the treatment of minorities. Why is it so difficult for many football fans to take this at face value (“Lack of respect from Ravens ownership leads to empty seats,” Dec. 29)?

Over the past year, Mr. Trump has not proven himself to be trustworthy or truthful, yet many football fans choose to believe him over the football players. That doesn't make any sense to me.
