A 21-gun salute and a flyover of jets on Wednesday morning, Jan. 20? Really? According to TV network news, these grandiose trappings are not to mark the swearing-in of President Joe Biden, but rather a big send-off for our disgraced outgoing President Donald Trump. And no doubt a hatchling of his own fevered, megalomaniacal mind (”Sen. Mitch McConnell blames Trump, others in power for provoking US Capitol riot: ‘The mob was fed lies,’” Jan. 19).

Will this actually happen? Is there no office or committee or congressional chairperson or government accountant who can and will nix this vainglorious display and waste of taxpayer money? And one absolutely designed to overshadow Mr. Biden’s inauguration.

If Mr. Trump’s spectacular exit is really to take place, it will stand as a travesty to not only our democratic values but also to common decency. It is an “exit laughing” for the twice-impeached Mr. Trump.

It’s too much to hope that the media ignore the spectacle, but please, no more than 5 seconds of airtime!
