I am responding to several letters which concern President Donald Trump’s proposal to arm teachers in the classroom (“The absurdity of arming teachers,” Feb. 25). In addition to the reasons given by your readers, there are two additional ones that would result in more deaths rather than fewer ones.
First, the president plans to train teachers to be “able” to handle guns. However, a “trained“ teacher is not the same thing as a trained marksman. In these tragedies, there are usually several children gathered in a room. It is unlikely that the teacher would be able to pick off a shooter without also killing children.
Second, we are told the teachers will be trained in the use of guns, but will they be psychologically evaluated? I would wonder about a teacher who would volunteer to carry a gun around children. At least some of them would have psychological problems if only by the law of averages.
These are two reasons in addition to the many more that readers have offered about the horrible use of guns in the classroom.
