On taxes, GOP has embraced extortion

It is without argument why the Senate wants to take away the state and local tax deduction. But beyond that, I love the strategy. We will trade. Take away the state and local tax deduction and we won’t take away the other deductions that we propose like the medical deduction (“The Senate sets up battle with House on taxes,” Nov. 9). Even ignoring the fact that the tax cut for the wealthy will be partially funded by eliminating the local and state deductions for the middle class, what hutzpah to offer a compromise to accept the local and state tax deduction by offering not to cut other deductions (like the medical deduction).

I get it. Fund the rich at the expense of the middle class by eliminating the local and state tax deduction and then show a willingness to negotiate by offering not to cut more middle class deductions like medical expenses. That’s not a negotiation, that’s extortion.
